On November 11−12, our team participated in the UN Climate Change Conference COP 29 in Baku — here are our impressions!
🚎 The city was well-prepared: guests were greeted with conference posters at the airport, and free electric buses and taxis were organized. Entry to central Baku was restricted to reduce traffic.
🏟️ The event took place at the Baku Olympic Stadium, divided into two zones: the Green Zone and the Blue Zone.
— The Green Zone was open to everyone, including journalists, NGOs, scientists, and businesses. It hosted seminars, cultural events, and exhibitions. We participated as sustainability consultants for the Baku White City project.
Ksenia Agapova, founder of ESG Factor, served as a BREEAM assessor for the Baku White City business center, the first certified green building in Azerbaijan, as well as for the BWC Office Gate building, that was certified under BREEAM NC in 2023. She also shared insights on the district’s sustainable development prospects and the role of green certification in interviews with local TV channels.
The Blue Zone was dedicated to official UNFCCC negotiations, accessible only to delegates, observers, and journalists.
♻️ The conference showcased innovative sustainability technologies, including water extraction from air, waste-to-biochar recycling, sorbents, e-fuels, and hydrogen solutions. Cultural aspects were also highlighted, with live carpet-weaving demonstrations and an exhibition of contemporary local art.
The event was well-organized, but there’s room for improvement. We noticed a lack of networking opportunities between companies and government representatives. Additionally, the separation of the Green and Blue Zones into different areas limited interactions.
A day dedicated to sustainable construction was another key part of the program.
🌱 We were delighted to participate in COP 29. Events like these remind us of the importance of not only setting goals but also taking action to achieve them.
