Matrix Business Center
Matrix Business Center in Skolkovo is a hybrid of several urban spaces, combining the functions of a business center, a hall-transformer for events and performances, as well as a restaurant, fitness and exhibition complex. The building is designed right in the heart of the innovative center, opposite the famous Hypercube, and is the main public center of Skolkovo.
The building is a truncated pyramid hiding inside a nesting doll-shaped atrium. The unique shape of the building required a thorough study of structural solutions - as the central part of the building is the atrium, vertical communications of the object, including elevators, were placed on the sides of the pyramid at an angle. The bearing structures of the building are the monolithic facade, as well as the monolithic form of the atrium. Thanks to this solution, the architects managed to organize an internal space free of columns. The nest-doll is not visible from the outside in daylight, however, it becomes apparent at night due to unique lighting solutions.
The energy efficiency of an object is 27.5% better than the basic values. Given the complex architecture of the building and its multifunctionality, it was quite difficult to achieve such values. The designers were able to achieve energy efficiency improvements through the use of unique facade solutions, LED lighting, cold storage, as well as frequency controllers and highly efficient heat generation. A special challenge for the engineers was the inclined facade - the 400 m ramp contributed to the accumulation of heat from solar radiation. To reduce the impact of solar radiation, a special thermal paint was used, as well as triple glazing with a heat-retardant coating.
Thanks to the modular production of the structural facade, it was possible to significantly speed up the construction process and reduce waste produced on site. It is important to note that during the construction process, the contractor not only reduced the amount of construction waste generated, but also sent 5 waste groups for recycling - metal, cardboard, wood, packaging and glass.
The Transformer Hall is a unique facility capable of providing an infinite number of event scenarios - from an amphitheatre, banquet hall, dance floor, concert space to an exhibition hall divided into different volumes. Around the volume of the nest doll there is a 500 meter ramp, which serves as a space for a permanent exhibition.
At the very top of the building - in the crown of the nest-doll - there is an inner courtyard with a green roof and a garden planted with bushes. In the dome of the nested doll there are 61 light lamps that fill the space with natural light. The light flow from the dome is controlled by smart glass with controlled transparency. If necessary, the daylight supply can be blocked by the opaque properties of the glass.
This building is a unique example of interesting, innovative solutions based on 100% potential of domestic designers. Each unit, each engineering solution was coordinated with the designer and passed a thorough architectural supervision. Due to its multifunctionality and transformability Matrix is unique not only in terms of architecture, engineering, structural design and environmental friendliness, but also in terms of social purpose of the object.
