What is net-zero?

The term net zero became wide spread within next few years. Net-zero stands for achieving a balance between the greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere and those retained. Below we look at what this concept consists of and what steps a company should take to be considered a net-zero.
The term net zero became wide spread within next few years. Net-zero stands
for achieving a balance between the greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere and those retained. According to Darryl Mattocks, Enistic's company founder,
to become net-zero or the company should go through the 3 steps:
1
Measure
At this stage the scope of measurement factors should be defined –
for example, you could include only emissions from energy production,
or expand the scope to the emissions from business trips.
Next step - choosing the estimates to assess the volume of current emissions.
When planning to become net-zero you should define the baseline year
and the reasonable target year to achieve your goals – it should not be
a long-distance. For now, the 2027-2030 target years are great.
2
Reduce carbon emissions
Challenge number one for this stage – there are no standards or guidelines to choose the right way. To start acting you may answer the following questions:

  • What sort of projects you are going to implement - low-cost projects, for example, LED lighting installation, or are you going to up the ante and replace the heating system, move from gas or oil into the electricity, reduce the business trips, etc
  • How much do you plan to reduce it by? There is a good standard - the SBTi's Corporate Net-Zero Standard – the framework for corporate net-zero targets setting in line with climate science. It includes the guidance, criteria, and recommendations companies need to set net-zero targets consistent with limiting global temperature rise to 1.5°.
  • Who is checking this? Somebody should be appointed to check the statements and net-zero targets the company set.
        3
        Offsetting
Not all the carbon emissions can be reduced, so, we should find a way to compensate for it. The most common and simple way to offset CO2 is planting trees or participating in any other compensation project.

You can do it with your resources or pay someone – there are many organizations to plant a tree on your behalf. Depending on a region,
you can also participate in a variety of compensation projects – for example, solar ovens for countries that got a lot of sunlight.

Always check the material realization of your investments – it should be countable and clear.
        Why net zero?
What's the difference between gross zero and net zero?

Given the impact that carbon emissions have on our planet, you might wonder
why we aren't aiming for zero, or gross zero, rather than net zero.
Gross zero would mean stopping all emissions, which isn't realistically attainable across all sectors of our lives and industry. Even with best efforts to reduce them,
there will still be some emissions.

Net zero looks at emissions overall, allowing for the removal of any unavoidable emissions, such as those from aviation or manufacturing. Removing greenhouse
gases could be via nature, as trees take carbon dioxide from the atmosphere,
or through new technology or changing industrial processes.

Our company will help you to assess your assets' portfolio emissions
it's a very important step on the way to net-zero – as a rule, over 60% of all
emissions are produced by buildings! Feel free to contact us!
